The Colossus of Rhodes

Colossus took 12 years to construct and was a 105 foot high bronze statue of Helios, the sun god.  Erected in about 280 BC by the citizens of Rhodes, capital of the Greek island of the same name. For years, the statue stood at the harbor entrance, until a strong earthquake hit Rhodes about 226 BC. The city was badly damaged, and the Colossus was broken at the knee.  Legend has it that it straddled the entrance to the Mandraki harbor but given the height of the statue and the width of the harbor mouth, this could have never occurred. The statue stood on a promontory overlooking the city.
