Ethel Percy Andrus -- National Retired Teachers --  a Klos family project Jane Addams - Social Reformer - A Klos Family Project

Ethel Percy Andrus empathized with the plight of retired citizens and was instrumental in founding the National Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.  She desired to assure retired Americans the support of these groups that promoted the independence and dignity of retired citizens.

Coming from a background in urban education, Ethel became aware of the meager pensions that retired educators struggled to live on.  The NRTA with a large membership was able to offer its members low-cost insurance programs and in 1956, the first health insurance program for people 65 and over.

She broadened her scope of interest to found the AARP  in 1958, which offered its services to all older Americans.  AARP continues to contribute to the lives of retired citizens with programs targeting second careers, health insurance, travel and more.  AARP became a powerful lobbying force for older adults, and Andrus was asked often by federal agencies to advise them on problems of the aged to improve their programs and policies.  She also was the founder and editor of Modern Maturity, AARP's popular magazine which has nationwide circulation.
