Speaker of the House 95th, 96th, 97th, 98th, and 99th Congress
O’NEILL, Thomas Phillip, Jr. (Tip), a
Representative from Massachusetts; born in Cambridge, Mass., December 9, 1912;
attended the parochial schools; was graduated from St. John’s High School in
1931 and from Boston College in 1936; engaged in the insurance and real estate
business in Cambridge, Mass., since 1937; member of the State house of
representatives 1936-1952, serving as minority leader in 1947 and 1948 and as
speaker 1949-1952; member of Democratic State committee 1942-1952; member of
Cambridge School Committee in 1946 and 1947; elected as a Democrat to the
Eighty-third and to the sixteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1953-January
3, 1987); chairman, Select Committee on Campaign Expenditures (Eighty-ninth
through Ninety-second Congresses); majority whip (Ninety-second Congress),
majority leader (Ninety-third and Ninety-fourth Congresses), Speaker of the
House of Representatives (Ninety-fifth through Ninety-ninth Congresses); was not
a candidate for reelection in 1986; was a resident of Cambridge, Mass., until
his death in Boston, Mass., on January 5, 1994.
