James Monroe Scholarship Writing Competition Rules

∑ To be eligible, the student must be a junior or senior in high school.

∑ In accordance with our sponsor, any student under 18 must have their parent or guardian print, sign and return the Virtualology Consent form.

∑ The paper must discuss the topic selected by the James Monroe Memorial Foundation.

∑ The first page of the submission should include the following information: first and last name, title of paper, grade, name of high school, state, phone number, address, and e-mail address.

∑ The paper may or may not be an assigned part of a formal class or registered home school assignment.

∑ The paper must be between 1000-1500 words in length.

∑ The paper must be double-spaced.

∑ The paper must be typed in 12pt. Times New Roman font.

∑ The paper must have 1-1 Ĺ inch margins.

∑ The paper must be properly documented with either footnotes or endnotes. Turabian or MLA guidelines should be used to document sources.

∑ A bibliography is also required.

∑ All submissions must be original work.

∑ The paper must be submitted via e-mail as an attachment to the following address:

James Monroe Scholarship Writing Competition Timeline

Start Date: Friday, January 26th

End Date: 10:00pm Friday, March 23rd

All submissions must be received electronically by March 23, 2001 at 10pm to be considered in the competition.

Winners Picked by Friday, April 6th

All winners will be notified via e-mail before 10pm April 6th..

Award Presentation: Saturday, April 28th

Winning entries will be posted on the website. The James Monroe Memorial Foundation will award winners with scholarships and medals at a ceremony in front of the Governorís mansion in Richmond. Several dignitaries will be present. The winners will be asked to read their work .

A schedule of the day's events will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
