Thomas Nast
1840 - 1902
19th century's most persuasive political cartoonist
Thomas Nast has long been regarded as the greatest political cartoonist in American history. His contributions to American culture are not always remembered, but they are seen almost every day. Nast created the two most widely used political symbols in the United States: the G.O.P. Elephant and the Democratic Donkey. When Americans think of Santa Claus, it is also Nast's vision of him that they see. The jolly, round-bellied man with a red nose and a pipe in his hand was first drawn by Nast in the 1860s.
