Open House June 18th -- 1 to 4 pm This exceptional home was constructed for Baseball legend John "Honus" Wagner on his specifications, in 1917-18. The Flying Dutchman resided here with his family from 1918 until his death in 1955. The home is peppered with early 20th Century many original upgrades including gas fireplaces, stain glass windows, a stone carved JW and fine hardwood floors. Most remarkably, the actual land contract signed by Wagner along with over 60 original construction receipts for labor, materials and appointments were also acquired by the current owners and are listed FOR SALE HERE. These historical documents provide true sports enthusiasts with a roadmap necessary to identify which appointments are indisputably original Honus Wagner memorabilia.
Acquired in October 2005 for $130,000 this is a live-in-able house, but also a perfect place for guests to stay while in Pittsburgh for sports events, or a home for your collection of sports artifacts. Located only 5 miles from downtown Pittsburgh the home is situated on Library Hill in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. The Wagner home is located only 3 blocks from Carnegie's Town Center.
The original plan of the current owners was to turn the home into a Bed, Breakfast & Museum open in time for the July 7th Major League Baseball Game hosted at PNC Park only ten minutes via the Carnegie Express Busway. The Planning Board rejected the proposal due to lack of sufficient parking. Installation of 4 additional parking spots in the backyard (which is estimated at a cost approximately $30,000) would resolve their objection but the current owners did not want to disturb the original grounds - Click Here for the Newspaper story. Presently the home has three spots in the rear via an easement along with 150' driveway to a rear/single car detached brick garage. This 3 story/3 level home is constructed in off white Brick with an spacious front porch. The home has three gas fireplaces in full view while two have been covered-up in the 2nd floor bedrooms. Heat is a FHA gas and hot steam mix. Utilities are public water/sewer. Hardwood floors abound with some wall to wall and area rugs. It is located in a two-family residential area and was converted to two units in the late 1970's. The owners did many improvements since October in preparation for the B&B use. They priced the home to sell at $195,000 removing none of the Honus Wagner original Appointments. The House in its current condition would mostly likely appraise at the 150-160,000 level without any Honus Wagner association.
Lot measures approx 52 x 165

Starting bid is $195,000, with no reserve. Please, serious inquiries only. Also listed this week (separately) are the original documents from the home's construction, including the deed for the land (signed "John H. Wagner"), and about 60 receipts and documents from the various builders and suppliers involved in the work. Many of the original lighting and window fixtures, detailed in the papers, are still present in the house. Despite conversion to a duplex in the 80's, much of the original woodwork and features are still intact.
Wagner led the Pirates to pennants in 1901, 1902, 1903, and 1909, when he outplayed Ty Cobb. The Flying Dutchman led the league five times in RBI and stolen bases, six times in slugging, and seven times in doubles. When he retired as a player in 1917, he led the National League in hits, runs, singles, doubles, and triples.
