Died May 19, 1921, in Washington, DC

Federal Judicial Service:
Supreme Court of the United States
Nominated by Grover Cleveland on February 19, 1894, to a seat vacated by Samuel Blatchford; Confirmed by the Senate on February 19, 1894, and received commission on February 19, 1894. Service terminated on December 18, 1910, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Supreme Court of the United States, Chief Justice
Nominated by William H. Taft on December 12, 1910, to a seat vacated by Melville Weston Fuller; Confirmed by the Senate on December 12, 1910, and received commission on December 12, 1910. Served as chief judge, 1910-1921. Service terminated on May 19, 1921, due to death.
