Lucky Luciano

November 24, 1897 - January 26, 1962

By-name of Charles Luciano, original name SALVATORE LUCANIA, the most powerful chief of American organized crime in the early 1930s and a major influence even from prison, 1936-45, and after deportation to Italy in 1946.

In 1942 Luciano gave the orders from his prison cell to stop US sabotage on the docks and it ended. In 1946 his sentence was commuted and he was deported to Italy, where he settled in Rome. In 1947 he moved to Cuba, and ran a gambling and drug syndicate from the small island nation.  The Cuban regime eventually to deported him and he ended up in Naples, Italy.  He died of a heart attack in Naples in 1962 and was buried in St. John's Cathedral Cemetery, Queens, N.Y.
