predatory, meat-eating dinosaurs had large sharp serrated teeth as well as
menacing claws at the ends of their hands and feet. This claw is a hand claw
from the Jurassic-age predator, Allosaurus. It is approximately 3 inches in
length. The portion of the claws actually preserved are the bone cores. In life
a sheath of material would cover the claw and would be razor sharp for slashing
at their victims. The groove in the side is for a major blood vessel, similar to
the blood vessels seen in the claws of cats and birds today. This specimen was
excavated from the Jurassic Morrison Formation at the Dinosaur Safaris Inc. dig
site in Wyoming.
The name "dinosauria" was choosen by
Dr. Richard Owen, an English doctor. Owen first used the word in his "Report
on British Fossil Reptiles" presented to the British Association
for the Advancement of Science in 1841. "Dinosaurs" is a
combination of two Greek words"deinos (fearfully great)" and "sauros
(a lizard)." Thus the name literally means "fearfully great
lizard." not terrible lizard.
