Antoine Cadillac

1660 - 1717

Founder Detroit

By Sophie H. - Gotha Middle School, Windermere, Florida.

Antoine Cadillac (1658? -1730) was born in Gascony, France and grew up in Les Languedoc. He also went to Nova Scotia and Maine.

He was an army officer in France. He was a captain/administrator in a French army in Canada. Also he was a French colonist and became the governor of French Louisiana.

He was the founder of Detroit, Michigan and he was in command of Mackinac (Michigan) which was a fur trading post in the west. He obtained a grant for the Detroit area and took a large amount of colonists there.

Shortly after he became governor, people did not like the way he governed, so soon after, in 1716, he returned to France and retired.
