John Steinbeck

1902-1968

Nobel Prize 1962

American writer

Born in Salinas, California, Steinbeck attended Stanford University for six years, but never completed his degree.   In 1925 he moved to New York City, where he was employed  as a bricklayer and reporter.  In 1927 after  returning to California Steinbeck began his career as a novelist.  By the late 1930s, Steinbeck earned both critical recognition and popular success for his populist novels, including Tortilla Flat (1935), In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937) and Grapes of Wrath (1939).

Steinbeck worked as a World War II correspondent in Italy and Northern Africa for the New York Herald Tribune.  After the the he returned to his novels and his later work  East of Eden (1952) and the crosscountry travel diary Travels with Charley (1962) were popular but never received the critical acclaim of the 1930's..  In 1962, he received the Nobel Prize for literature "for his realistic as well as imaginative writings, distinguished by a sympathetic humor and keen social perception."

Although the Pulitzer Prize winning author was never the subject of an FBI investigation, his name came to the FBI's attention on several occasions during the 1940's as a result of his association with communist front groups -- Text Courtesy of the FBI - Freedom of Information Act
