1822 GOLD HALF EAGLE
The 1822 half eagle, is the greatest rarity
of all U.S. coins although not as famous as the 1804 Silver Dollar. Only three
specimens exist today, with two permanently impounded in the Smithsonian
Institution. This coin last appeared at public auction in 1982, when it realized
an astonishing $687,500 in the "Louis Eliasberg Sale."
