Alvin Cullum York (1887-1964) was born in Fentress
County, Tennessee. He grew up on a farm in the mountains. Growing up he
developed an amazing marksmanship with a pistol and rifle.
During World War I he was drafted into the army. He was a religious man and

He wiped out machine gun nests, shot about 25 Germans, and captured another 132
Germans by himself.
When York came back to the United States, he was a hero. He was awarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor and received many other honors .He lived the rest
of his life on his native land in Tennessee.
Alvin York is famous for capturing 132 Germans by himself and winning the
