On July 2, 1881, Guiteau shot Garfield in the back with
a .44-caliber revolver. "The
President's tragic death was a sad necessity," is a quote from the
letter found in his pocket of the assassin. He fled the shooting scene in
a cab, leaving behind many witnesses. Guiteau reported to jail hours later. In
his cell, Guiteau wrote his own epitaph: "Here lies the body of Charles
Guiteau, Patriot and Christian." After a Supreme
Court appeal failed, Guiteau was hanged at 12:40 p.m. June
30, 1882
