Walter Owen Bentley

1888-1971

Manufacturer Founded Bentley Motors

Known as "W.O.', Bently was born of middle class parents in 1888 and was the youngest of nine children. He began his automotive career by joining one of his brothers at the London agency for French DFP cars. The Bentley brothers bought out the DFP agency's original owners, renamed the business Bentley and Bentley.  Bentley's glory years were   in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930 to set up a record of race wins that was not equaled until the 1950's by Jaguar and not beaten until the 1960's until Ferrari.  By 1931 the depression had so badly affected sales that the Bentley Company was forced into liquidation and taken over by Rolls-Royce Limited.  W.O. worked with Rolls-Royce for some time to advise, test and generally help expand the market of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars throughout the world.  W.O. Bentley MBE died in 1971.
