Wild Bill Hickok (1837-1876) was born in Troy Grove, Illinois, on May 27, 1837. In 1855, he served with General, James Lane's Free State Forces in Kansas. He drove stagecoaches over Santa Fe and Oregon trails. On Oregon Trail, at Rock Creek Station, Nebr., the much-debated battle occurred with the "McCanles Gang" and David C. McCanles and two other men were killed.

In the Civil War, he served the Union forces as a spy and a scout. In July 1865, he killed Dave Tutt. He became a Deputy U.S. Marshall at Fort Riley, Kansas. He served Generals Hancock and Custer in the Indian Wars. In 1869 to 1871, he became the marshal in Hays City and in Abilene, Kansas with reckless frontier characters. In 1872-1873, he toured the East with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show.

He was a card player all his life. While holding a "Dead Man's Hand" in a poker game, he was shot from behind and killed by a frontier vagrant, Jack McCall, on Aug 2, 1876, at Deadwood, South Dakota.
