Charles Goodyear

1800-1860

 

Charles Goodyear was born in December 29, 1800 in New Haven, Connecticut. American inventor of the vulcanization process that made possible the commercial use of rubber. In 1839 he accidentally dropped some India rubber mixed with sulfur on a hot stove and so discovered vulcanization.  Although his invention made millions for others, at his death he left debts of some $200,000. He wrote an account of his discovery entitled Gum-Elastic and Its Varietie.  He died on July 1, 1860 in New York City
